Poe's talk on the nature of the Universe was given at the New-York Historical Society on 3 February to raise funds to establish the "Stylus" literary magazine. It was later published in book form as Eureka.

Concerning his reputation for drunkenness, noting that his private life is "rigorously abstemious," but that this is seen only by people who know him well. Mentioning that "the causes which maddened me to the drinking point are no more" and resolving "I am done drinking, forever." Enclosing (not present) a review of his lecture on the Universe by E.A. Hopkins, and giving a detailed outline of that talk.
