Joseph Planta was the principal librarian of the British Museum from 1799 until his death in 1827. Henry Ellis (in 1819, secretary to the trustees of the Museum) succeeded Planta as principal librarian.

This letter is from a large collection of letters written to Sir George Howland Beaumont (1753-1827) and Lady Margaret Willes Beaumont (1758-1829) of Coleorton Hall and to other members of the Beaumont family.

Summary
Enclosing a copy of Henry Ellis's report on the manuscripts that Beaumont had sent for his inspection; returning the manuscripts which Ellis "does not deem of sufficient consequence to be deposited in our Library"; saying of seven other manuscripts which Ellis did report favorably on that they will "be kept safely until we receive your directions in what manner we are to dispose of them."
