Discussing Henry David Thoreau's conduct at Harvard, and noting that while some instructors found him "indifferent ... to a degree that was faulty," he [Josiah Quincy] thought his "general conduct" was "very satisfactory" and attributes any "falling off" in his scholarship to "his ill-health rather than to willfullness".
