Summary
Relating an incident in which, following a party where the guests were drinking heavily, the Duke of Hamilton took "Lord Erskine['s] Snuff box with Marys Picture in The Lid & putting it into his Pocket said, You have often promised to pass a Week with me at Hamilton & have never kept your word, Now I shall keep this as a pledge till you come to claim it at Hamilton---Lord E. went soon after up to London--married & changed his habits of Life all together so that he never went to Hamilton and though he frequently wrote for The Picture allways received the same answer. "You shant have It till you come to claim it at Hamilton according to your Promise;" saying he has seen the picture "in the hands of the late Duchess of H & Argyll & since her Death in those of the Duke of Argyll.
