Record ID:

Accession number:
MA 416
Date:
1656 May 30.
Description:
1 item (1 p.)
Notes:

A list of passengers who departed from Gravesend and traveled aboard the Speedwell to America in 1656.
The footnote reads, "Theese were Landed at Boston in N.E. the 27th of the 6th moneth, 1656," and is initialed by John Endecott, the Puritan Governor of the Massachusetts Bay colony. Since England and its American colonies did not change to the Gregorian calendar until 1752, the sixth month would presumably have been September. This list has been said to include the first eight Quakers to come to America, but the accuracy of this statement has not been confirmed.
The names of the Quakers on board are marked on the list with a "Q": William Brand (age 40), John Copeland (28), Christopher Holder (25), Thomas Thurston (34), Mary Prince (21), Sarah Gibbons (21), Mary Weatherhead (26), and Dorothy Waugh (20).

Inscriptions/Markings:

Watermark: One handled pot with letters "URLC" inside, on pedestal, crescent at top.
