This essay was first published in the Atlantic Monthly in Sept. 1858; Emerson presented a lecture entitled "Eloquence" on Dec. 3, 1867 (see MA 996.2, a letter discussing this lecture), but it is unclear whether that lecture was based on this essay or the essay (also entitled "Eloquence") that Emerson published in Letters and Social Aims in 1876.
