Summary
Beginning "I congratulate you, my dear Betsy, on the resumption of your usual style of address to me. I can make large allowances for your suspicions, but your own eyes have latterly beheld my unblemished conduct, your own heart ought to have felt my attentions, & your understanding might have offered itself against the suggestions of any apparent deviation from my promises"; protesting "my errors have been forced upon me, or produced under the impression of improper stimulus, & I repeat that my heart has never been engaged, or for an instant estranged from you; & in the midst of all my aberrations my sole & my constant anxiety has been for you & your family"; adding a quotation, possibly from Much Ado About Nothing; discussing her business affairs: "It rejoiceth me to find your ball has given such general satisfaction. I had anticipated that your success would be considerable, for I deem the dancing of your daughters highly accomplished & interesting, & amongst a variety of little vexations, it is a great consolation to me when I reflect that a profession is chalked out for them, which must give them a tolerable independance"; directing her to write to Mr. Cocker ("an impudent fellow") daily until she receives the rent; writing that he hopes to make £300 at the upcoming benefit; adding "You can do no harm to take memorandums for boxes, & I'll determine on the time & entertainments next week"; giving her detailed directions about an urgent payment to be made to Mr. Barrett, through "Mr. Phipps's the Albion Office"; adding that he is going to Birmingham on Saturday and will return to Liverpool to finish his nights there the following week; telling her that the debt of £17 to Mr. Heywood should be paid to "nobody but the Assignees"; sending "love to the Circle."
