Summary
Congratulating his lordship on the successful raid by British forces on Cherbourg (1758 August 7-16); writing that "never Troops behaved better than ours & never any worse than the french;" describing the advantages the French had, which they failed to make use of; adding that Cherbourg "was found a great deal stronger than I apprehended;" describing his own participation in the fighting: "to conform to the Spirit of the Times, I myself ventured to the day with a small detachment of Light Dragoons to drive a party of french foot sword in hand into a hedge, & Received their fire, which by good Luck killed only one horse;" mentioning that Colonel Elliott was with him; adding that Edward (possibly Prince Edward) is "perfectly well & pleased."
