Notes
In the first sentence Murphy records his authorship of the "Essay on the life ... of Samuel Johnson" (1792). The date of the notes is fixed by a reference to his "Arminius" as having been published the preceding May (1798). The notes may possibly have been intended as additions to the manuscript autobiography which Murphy left incomplete at his death.
