Summary
Informing him that he delivered his dispatches to "the Commander in Chief and the Minister of France" in Philadelphia and that the Commander in Chief has "matters of importance to communicate to you which he does not think proper to commit to paper, I am thus far on my return. He waits for some events to take place especially to hear from you before he dispatches me, as it is reported that you have been repulsed in an attack upon Lt. Colonel Stewart with considerable loss, which If so, may produce some alterations in his plan respecting you. Five or six days will probably explain the truth officially and about that time i suppose I shall sett off;" commenting on his success, "Everybody is sensible of the difficulties you have to struggle with and all seem disposed to do you justice. Your conduct has astonished your Enemies and given real satisfaction to your friends : and in a military view is considered upon a general scale brilliant as well as important;" reporting that "His Lordship has fortified himself very strongly at York - and no doubt will make a very spirited and obstinate resistance;" reporting on the number of ships with reinforcements due from Britain and France; suggesting that Sir Henry Clinton will immediately take "all the troops that can be spared from New York" to reinforce South Carolina; explaining that this letter will come by courier but he will personally deliver the"private letters."
