Reporting in detail on the position and movements of the troops; reporting that "General Sumner has applied to me for leave to go home, he tells me he thinks he can be of more service there at present than at this place, as his ill state of health will not allow him to be of much service here, and was he in North Carolina he would recover and be on the spot to forward on the Troops to this place as fast as possible which he has promised me to do. I have accordingly given him leave to return home;" requesting that he ask the Governor to have "flats stationed at Ponpon, Ashepoo & Combashee Rivers to facilitate the marching of Troops through those parts of the Country, it seems to be absolutely necessary as they are now obliged to go many miles around. I have sent some Prisoners of War down and some of our Deserters as I could not try them in Camp especially four, which belong to the State Troops who must be tried by an Order from the Governor & Council."
