Summary
Concerning the contested seat at Shrewsbury in which Pulteney is interested; saying he will speak to the Duke of Grafton on his behalf "and shall do all in my power to sound him with regard to Shrewsbury, but for fear of commiting Blunders, of any kind I shall only touch warily, as no doubt the Success will finally depend upon opinions His Grace may form from a tete a tete conversation with yourself. Your brother [John Johnstone, 1734-1795] has wanted me to make proposition about Haslemere. I am sure it would be ridiculous in me to talk of that Business circumstanced as it is after the Dukes Declaration to me when I proposed being a Candidate myself for that place, besides it is utterly incompatible with your pretensions at Shrewsbury for as I understand the matter if John has the merits of the Election at Haslemere Lord Clive has them at Shrewsbury. In short I can have no hopes for John, but in that case Burrel may be provided for, and vacate his Seat, John must then succeed him but all this I think will depend upon you."
