Summary
Expressing his pleasure at hearing of his success "against ninety six & confined the Enemy within narrower Bounds;" informing him that when he heard that the enemy had received reinforcements he ordered 2,000 reinforcements for his support but understood that his order had been countermanded; wishing to hear whether he needs "Reinforcements of this kind." saying that the State will support in any way that he wishes; adding that "The Necessity we have been under of making large Draughts of Militia for the immediate Defence of the state has been a great obstacle to the filling up of our Continental Line. We have now regained some Degree of Tranquillity & shall turn our attention to this Business; so that I flatter myself our Line will in a short Time be very respectable. Should you desire a Reinforcement of Militia, I fear we shall find it impracticable to arm you without depriving ourselves of the Means of Defence for which Reason I wish to be informed whether it will be in your Power to give any assistance in this Respect."
