Dating: The day and month of writing are partially cancelled or over-written, and could possibly read 5 juin, 25 juin, 5 juillet, or 25 juillet. The date 25 juin is supported by internal evidence (see docket) and in Lentz.

The three leaves of this letter were framed in glass and enclosed in a green morocco gilt case by Gruel and housed together with a copy of Cours de mathématiques, annotated by Napoleon (PML 15482), in a separate green gilt case. Both green cases and their contents were stored in a decorative brown wood box, inlaid with brass and marked "Reliques." The letter has been removed from the glass and placed in an archival folder. The book, the two green cases, and the wood box have been transferred to the Printed Books Dept.
This is said to be the earliest surviving autograph letter of Napoleon.
With a postscript of eleven lines signed in the autograph of his brother Luciano (Lucien) Bonaparte.
