Summary
Reporting that "the enemy have evacuated Williamsburg and were retiring by our last accounts to James Town; adding that this report is "from a deserter who left him yesterday;" reporting that "Gregory has lost the important port that opens into Carolina. If Cornwallis is com: in chief he will not take his cavalry to New York. Perhaps he intends a serious force against you. I have given it to the M. as my opinion that the Pennsylvanians should be in a situation to move to you the moment the intentions of the enemy shall be explained. You will suppose all the rest."
