This item is part of a collection of letters and documents of Robert E. Lee. The collection includes an autograph letter signed from Lee to his cousin Martha Williams, dated [1845?] Nov. 11 (MA 1049.1); a typed copy of a letter from Lee to Martha Williams, dated 1866 Dec. 22 (MA 1049.2); a special order signed for Lee by his adjutant, W.H. Taylor, dated 1865 Apr. 9 (MA 1087); a signed copy of General orders no. 9, dated 1865 Apr. 10 (MA 1088.1); and a contemporary manuscript copy of General orders no. 9 (MA 1088.2). Items in the collection are described in five separate records.
Through a curious error, Grant is here described as commanding the Confederate armies.
