Summary
Collection consists of 104 letters from Sir Thomas Lawrence to the Irish politician and writer J. W. Croker. Many letters refer to Lawrence's paintings, especially the portraits of Miss Croker and the future King William IV. Some are concerning Peel's 1829 election, and two ask for loans of over £100. In one letter (MA 1063.98), Lawrence compares himself favorably to Sir Joshua Reynolds, noting that "there is one point in which I excel Sir Joshua." The collection also contains two letters (MA 1063.1-2) from Rosamond (Croker's adopted daughter) to her "dear Papa," as well as 1 letter (MA 1063.93) from J.W. Croker to Rev. A. Bloxam and 1 letter (MA 1063.48) from Sir Robert Peel to Croker. Letters have been described individually in 108 catalog records; see related records for more information.
