Summary
Discussing, at length and in detail his three heroes, Hannibal, Frederic and Wellington and from that discussion giving advice to his son; saying "There is a similitude in the leading circumstances of my three heros - the first contended against Rome the greatest of the nations then on earth - Frederic ag'st Austria, in that day like Rome & Wellington ag'st France, the colossal power in late days - The first & the last fought too at the head of troops partly their own country, partly Spaniards - Frederic to be sure may be said to have commanded Prussians only, an advantage never to be doubted in war - Frederic & W[ellington] succeeded completely in their objects;" discussing at length the admirable character traits of Hannibal, Frederic and Wellington; saying "Frederic whose character I so much admire was remarkable for his frugality or rather [illegible] & assiduity. I wish to hold him up to your view in the anxious hope that you may be led to imitate him in those respects. It will secure personal independence & will give success to all your pursuits;" continuing to discuss in detail the personal habits of Frederic and his good fiscal sense; saying "You may acquire the same & in your little affairs alike important to you as his great affairs were to him it will be sure to produce the same effects. That is may begin at once, I learn by late letters from your dear mother is indispensable, as your expences transcend expected limits - Do my dear Carter think seriously & constantly on this subject..."
