Robert E. Lee's letter is on p. 3-4. It is preceded by an autograph letter signed from his wife, Mary Custis Lee, to Martha Williams, dated [1845?] Nov. 10 (p. 1-2), and followed by an autograph letter signed from "Julia" to Martha Williams (p. 4). Julia calls herself Lee's cousin.

Discussing the impression she made on the young officers during her visit to the Lees; commenting on a visit to Governors Island; mentioning the election of [James K.] Polk and [George M.] Dallas and the possibility of Lee's being ordered to Texas; giving news of his children. Mrs. Lee's letter gives news of friends and family and talks about visits to Staten Island and Governors Island.
