Summary
Expressing his anger at "the old Admiral" [de Grasse]; saying he will never forgive him "for Having So Suddenly overthrown our plan against Wilmington - the taking of it, the Maneuvering of the fleet to Savhana, the jonction with You, and then a Voyage to France when I would Have Schemed again Charlestown, Such was the plan I Had proposed to Myself, and I know it Would Have Met With Your Approbation;" assuming that he has much earlier Intelligence on Wilmington and Charlestown from General St. Clair, so he will relate, in this letter, his plan to return to France; discussing his plan for the next campaign and the objective of Maritime superiority; discussing prospects for peace; saying "I am not of those who think we will Have peace this Winter - I think Great Britain will Make a last effort - I do not Believe it impossible for Her to Make a Treaty with Russia - in a Word, I depend upon an other Campaign and Hope I will be once more a Soldier in your Army;" expressing his wishes for his happiness,, his obligations to him, his affection for him and his hope that he will serve with him in another campaign .
