The letter is written at the end of a copy of the detailed agreement drawn up by Cadell, dated 6 May 1847, setting forth "a succinct view" of the financial relations between himself and the trustees of Scott since the latter's death in 1832, and proposing the terms of the new agreement between them which will finally settle Scott's estate and leave Abbotsford unencumbered.
Summary
Accepting the terms of the agreement whereby Cadell assumes the debt of more than £24,000 against the estate of Sir Walter Scott in return for sole ownership of the copyrights to all Scott's works and to Lockhart's Life of Scott.
