Three lines written in the left margin in the top portion of the first page, "I bequeath this manuscript copy of Whittier's poem to my niece Caroline Carter;" Caroline Carter was the niece of Mary Esther Carter. a neighbor and close friend of Whittier.
With 10 lines of verse added, in another autograph, at the end of the poem with a notation in the left margin "as afterwards published in The National Era."
