Purchased by the Morgan Library in 1945, from the Rosenbach Co., which states that they purchased it, through an agent, from the family of Dr. S. Weir Mitchell.
This fair copy manuscript was written out by Whitman for Dr. S. Weir Mitchell, at the request of Horace Howard Furness, for payment of $100. On the verso of the manuscript Mitchell has written, "To give Walt a little money I offered for a gentleman 100$ for an autograph copy of My Captain - I pin it to Furness note April 1890."
This manuscript differs slightly from the first printing, but agrees with the version in Leaves of Grass (1881). In the next to the last line Whitman has made an error, writing "dead" for "deck."
Whitman gave the first draft of the manuscript (not in the Morgan Library), with many corrections, to Horace Traubel (See Traubel's book "With Walt Whitman in Camden," Boston, 1906-14, vol. 2, p. 316-317).
Whitman wrote this poem on the death of Abraham Lincoln in 1865; it was first printed in his book Sequel to Drum Taps (1865) and was reprinted in Leaves of Grass (1881).
