With a note at the top of the recto from John Jay, who appears to have been the Domestic Corresponding Secretary of the New York Historical Society, transmitting this letter "To I.K. Tefft, Esqr / fr. his friend... / New York / August 10, 1838." Mr. Tefft was also a member of the New York Historical Society and an manuscript and autograph collector.
