Notes
Partial translation (by John Bidwell): "I have finally found, God willing, that provincial map, or itinerary, or whatever name you want to put on it, which I think you have been seeking for some twenty years. Your advice means so much to me that I published copper engravings of one sheet some time ago. I have the original at home, having given enough assurances to those who have an interest in it that I will return it safely, for after they noticed my immense desire to get at it, they began to put some value on an object which they had previously neglected. I thought that I would send you an exact copy, but you are going to have to wait a while because the artist who, I think, is most diligent and best qualified for this kind of work is not available at the moment, but I think that he will be free soon." (Welser published the entire map at the Moretus Press in 1598.)
