Notes
See also MA 2519, the first series of "Dear Alicia" letters from John Steinbeck to Alicia Patterson Guggenheim, written in 1965 and 1966.
The "Dear Alicia" Letters were written for and published in "Newsday", Garden City, New York from November 1965 through May 1967; Alicia Patterson Guggenheim was founder and editor until her death in 1963.
The letters in this collection follow Steinbeck's numbering system so it appears that there should be 63 items in the box, however there are, in fact, 62 items. Steinbeck numbered his letters from 1 through 59, however there is no letter #53 in the collection (see MA 2581.62); it is believed that Steinbeck simply skipped #53 in his numbering as one batch of letters received ended with letter #52 and the next batch started with letter #54, thus the discrepancy between the item count and the numbering.
Provenance
Gift of John Steinbeck in 1966.
