Notes
Laurence Sterne met Catherine Fourmantel in 1759 or 1760, when she was engaged as a singer at York. His epistles to her are intimate and romantic love letters; he assures her of his constant love and desire to see her. Some letters also mention dining engagements and his busy schedule, and one is written in her voice, for her to copy and send to David Garrick, praising Tristram Shandy and encouraging him to review it favorably.
Summary
Collection consists of 12 letters to Catherine Fourmantel; 1 letter (written as from Catherine Fourmantel, and for her to copy and send on) to David Garrick; 1 manuscript copy of a letter to Eliza Draper; and a receipt and signed attestation related to the provenance of the collection. Letters in the collection have been individually described in separate catalog records; see related records for more information.
