Summary
Expressing his pride at being part of the surrender of Cornwallis and wishing he might have accompanied him "to the gates of Charles Town & share in that glory which of right is reserved for you...Pity me then my Dear General when I assure you that I am prevented from following my Duty & inclination by nothing but extreme Indigence, an utter incapacity of any longer supporting myself & family;" describing in detail and at length how he has tried to support himself and his troops and his appeal, after the Siege, to General Washington for his pay; saying "Under these Circumstances my Dear General I must necessarily quit[.] I have obtained a permission to go to Philadelphia to settle my accounts with Congress[.] After four Years fatiguing service it is right I should know on what footing I stand[.] If I have merited nothing I am content my pay they will not dispute;" concluding, "Such my Dear General is my situation as a Friend I communicate to you it is not exaggerated. Am I wrong to complain or can you blame me for quitting when all my Zeal & without Vanity I may say my Military Experience is attended with so little success & procures me so little satisfaction."
