Summary
Wishing him great joy on what may be the announcement of his appointment as Commander of the 18th Regiment of the Foot (Royal Irish); expressing his desire to join the military and referring to the openings in the 2nd Dragoon Guards; saying that he has talked about it with his father, Lord Grenville and Mr. Burges, all of whom approved and "...said that my being in the Army was no objection to remaining in the Diplomatique hereafter. I remember Your objecting to it but also that Your Grounds were that the Diplomatique was by far preferable to the other. I hope You will now approve of it as, if I can remain in both, both Interest & Inclination are attended to. Besides I fear I should now really find the office too Sedentary a life for me, and by going out I give my Brother a Step who will besides get a 100 Pounds & I think I can live cheaper in the Country with a [illegible] Pay than in London with 100 Pounds a Year;" expressing gratitude for his friendship and informing him that the Duke of York has not executed his commission because he has not received his answer.
