Summary
Congratulating him on his successes "which your fortitude & prudence has wrought in our favor Since your command in the Southern Department;" saying they have received reports of Cornwallis' surrender and though they are not official, there is public rejoicing; adding he has no news to report from "this Quarter; all Eyes are turned to the South for important Intelligence. Our Patriotism yet continues but money is Scarce & resources not Such as we could wish but the Spirit is truly willing;" regretting that their correspondence did not begin before he entered private life; expressing his sincere friendship.
