Summary
Concerning the troop movements of General Howe; congratulating him on his "Safe & triumphant Return to Philadelphia. Unless you have traveled mornings and Evenings, you have not escaped a Roasting. Friday last we were reviewed & in the afternoon unluckily marched about fourteen miles, which proved very hurtful to the men. Not being so happy as to agree about Gen'l Howe's intentions we have been marching and Counter marching, after the manner of Pilgrims to Mecca, to avoid falling in with the Flying Arabs. When Gen'l Howe left New York, I was well informed that he intended to the Southward, but was not Sure that Heaven had Confounded their Councils so much as to induce them South of Delaware at this Season of the year, They have been on board five Weeks next Thursday Evening, and as they took only one months forage with them, I expect they are landed in Some place by this time - in order to procure a Supply of Water, forage & fresh Provisions. If we have been harassed marching - I think they must have been in hot Water."
