According to Wilbur L. Cross, in the publication noted below, it was "Sterne's custom to make and keep copies of such of his letters as particularly pleased him and, to some extent, of letters that he received from others." The original Autograph Letter book contained the first 18 letters (MA 417.1-18); items MA 417.19-29 were added to the collection after 1897.
