Includes a typescript note on the verso: "This is the earliest journalizing by Thoreau yet discovered, -- before he began, in 1837[,] to keep a regular Journal or even a Commonplace-Book. It has been in my hands since 1880, and was printed by me in my first Life of Thoreau, (1882)." This is followed by an autograph note: "It is wholly in Henry's early handwriting, with which I am familiar," signed F.B. Sanborn and dated July 17, 1905.
