In Volume I, Part 2 (MA 481), Chapters XXV, XXXII, XXXVI and XL-XLVII are all text from a printed edition; Chapters XXVI, XXVII are in a secretary's hand and in the printed text; of the 210 pages in Volume II, 122 pages are from a printed edition, 34 in a secretary's hand and 54 are autograph manuscript.
In Volume I, Part I (MA 480), of the 221 pages, 154 are autograph manuscript, 36 in a secretary's hand and 31 are from a printed edition.
In Volume II, Part 1 (MA 482), of the 205 pages, 70 are autograph manuscript and 135 are from a printed text; Chapters V-XI, XIII-XV and XXIV are all text from a printed edition.
In Volume II, Part 2 (MA 483), of the 228 pages, 77 are autograph manuscript, 46 are in a secretary's hand and 105 are from a printed text; Chapters XXV-XXVII, XXXI, and XLII are all text from a printed edition.
Largely in the author's hand, some parts in the hand of a secretary, and missing parts supplied from printed text.
One page of this manuscript is bound with MA 472 (Drawings and Manuscripts from the Collection of J.F. Boyes) and is record MA 472.43; a half-page is bound with MA 472 and is record MA 472.44; one page is included with MA 813, the autograph manuscript for Denis Duval.
The secretary's hand is possibly that of his older daughter, Anne Thackeray Ritchie.
