Thackeray began work on Vanity Fair in February 1845 and received a publishing offer from Bradbury & Evans in January 1846; Vanity Fair was published in monthly installments from January 1847 through July 1848.

Written on the rectos of 112 pages and the versos of 4 pages with revisions throughout; chapters I-VI and VIII-XIII; chapter VII is not included; there are two versions of chapter VI, one with corrected proofs inserted into the autograph manuscript.
