Tennyson was named Poet Laureate in November 1850; the dedication "To the Queen" is dated March 1851 in the printed version of the 7th edition of his "Poems."
The printed version of this poem is dated March 1851; stanzas 3, 6, 7 and 8 of this autograph manuscript appear in the printed version; this manuscript cannot be dated with more specificity than the range given above.
