Story is based on Collins's 1857 play of the same title, which was loosely inspired by the loss of Sir John Franklin's Arctic expedition in 1845.
Written primarily in the hand of Harriet Graves, who was the daughter of Collins's nearly life-long partner, Caroline Graves. With the introduction and some pages of the story in the hand of Collins, and with many revisions in his hand throughout. Introduction is signed "W.C." and dated London, April 1874.
