De Quincey does not date this review, but he does note that Ferguson's book was published in 1856. He also mentions that he is writing in Scotland during the Christmas period (page 2).
Hogg explains in his preface to The Uncollected Writings of Thomas De Quincey (page xvi) that De Quincey contributed a number of essays in the form of letters to "Titan" when Hogg was the magazine's editor. This manuscript does not contain the complete text published in Hogg's volume; it ends on the words "gradually dispossesses it."
Written on seven sheets, with a few additional notes on versos.
Contains numerous autograph edits. There are also some small differences between the manuscript and the published text.
