Summary
Saying that he is very interested in Knight's letter and in the present state of affairs at St. Andrews; mentioning that the Duke is not currently in town, but the matter has been the subject of conversations between himself and Sir Francis Sandford; writing that Sandford's view is that the best thing to do is delay, and this appears to be Knight's wish as well; discussing the course that Knight has proposed and warning him against bringing politics into it; discussing an unnamed person whose claims Knight fears may prevail, and saying that he thinks Knight's fears are unnecessary; regarding an appointment: "I have, as of course you understand, nothing whatever to do with the appointment, which belongs to the general branch of the office & not to my own. But I think you may feel assured that what is considered best for the University will be done, apart from political claims. I am quite certain this is the wish of Sir Francis Sandford."
