The letter is part of a collection, MA 1352, which consists of letters from Charles Dickens to the Baroness, to her companion Hannah (Meredith) Brown, or the latter's husband, William Brown; with ten letters written by Catherine Dickens to Angela Burdett Coutts and one letter from Catherine Dickens to Mr. and Mrs. Brown and 73 letters written by others to Miss Coutts or to Dickens in his capacity as her unofficial almoner; and a few others. Provenance
The letters formed part of the Burdett-Coutts sale (Sotheby, 17 May 1922); they were purchased for Oliver W. Barrett in whose collection they remained until it was sold by his son (Parke-Bernet, 31 October 1951).
Summary
Concerning Charley's return to London; saying that he left, in the company of Mr. Forster, but that his trunk exceeded the weight limits of the Malle Poste and it was refused; adding that should he not call on her on Wednesday as planned, it would likely be because his grandmother kept him back until his clothes arrived and he would call on the following day.
