Summary
Thanking Strahan for his letter and "your Intelligence from your very sensible correspondent at Edinburgh;" regretting that he can do nothing to support Mr. Davidson's bid for a seat in Parliament; commenting on a revolt in Chile; saying that the account of Lord Anson's voyage foretold the course of events in Chile and Peru; adding "Quos deus vult perdere, Prius dementat ; we have tasted of this bitter cup, & have been visited with this curse, but the dementation in the Spanish Councils was stronger than ours, for they had notice & warning of the revolt of Colonies;" including another line in Latin; speculating "Perhaps this event may tend to restore Peace in Europe : Lord Peterborough said to the French General at the Seige [sic] of Barcelona speaking of the Spaniards whom he thought not worth fighting for, 'Il est bien bon de se battre pour eux.' This may be well applied to the americans;" returning a letter to Strahan and asking for news of an election.
