Notes
Earlier catalog records have ascribed this letter to Reverend Bryan Fairfax, 8th Lord Fairfax of Cameron (1736-1832). However, based on references in the letter to France, to "My Lord Kildare," and to a possible peace with Spain, it seems likely that the writer of this letter was the English scholar and courtier Brian Fairfax, who traveled to France with the Earl of Kildare in 1658. In a postscript to the letter to "Robt. Barwicke," Fairfax also refers to "my Cozen Rushworths Book," likely a reference to the lawyer and historian John Rushworth.
Fairfax has given the place of writing as "Roan," probably referring to Rouen.

Summary
The sheet contains two letters, one on the recto, addressed "Dear Brother" and dated "Roan. April 28. S.V.", and one on the verso, addressed "Dear Brother Barwicke" with no date or place of writing. Fairfax expresses his concern for the health of his brother and relays political news in the first and describes his travels in France in the second.
