Summary
Expressing concern that he has not heard from him since Christmas day; enclosing a "copy of a report of a Committee of our House for amending the Militia law, but I must acknowledge that I do not believe it will pass, (if it passes at all) without very considerable alterations. Our partnership concerns, altho they are on a footing less embarrassing than when I wrote you first, are nevertheless still such as to occupy all my resources & almost my whole time. To wind them up will yet require much labor & exertion. I hope, however, that they will terminate better than my fears had predicted, but it is impossible to Speak as yet with certainty. It is said that the back lands on the St. Lawrence will pay us for all our losses, but for myself I am not so sanguine, altho' those who ought to be better judges, speak very confidently;" asking if he would visit his family often and "advise somewhat as to the work out of doors, particularly as to the drawing of the manure..."
