Notes
Acquired as part of a large collection of letters addressed to William Angus Knight, Chair of Moral Philosophy at the University of St. Andrews and Wordsworth scholar. Items in the collection have been individually accessioned and cataloged.
Conway lists only "July 20" for the date of writing. He resigned from the position of Roscoe professor of art at University College, Liverpool, in 1888 and moved to London. Based on references to a move in the letter, it may have been written at around that time.
On stationery with embossed letterhead: "Savile Club, / 107. Piccadilly. W."

Summary
Saying that he received Knight's letter a week ago and has been thinking about it ever since; adding that he would like to consult with "some men whom I may meet here during the next few days before giving any particular list of books;" saying this question has always bothered him and there are "so few [books] of any educational value;" confessing "I have not paid much attention to the philosophical aspect of art;" explaining that he is in the midst of moving from Liverpool to London and giving his future address as 21 Clanricarde Gardens, Bayswater, "where I hope we shall see you at no distant date."
