Thanking him for the gift of his book; offering his compliments on his research and the authority it has lent to the expeditions findings; saying that "...I cannot for my Life, find out the Enigma of the alternation of current in Behring's Strait & therefore have been silent, for want of facts;" relating the conditions of his failing health; adding in a postscript, "I felt most gratified in getting some fresh & more authentic particulars respecting the death of our great Navigator."
