Summary
Concerning engravings for Hayley's Life of Romney: writing that he has "the three Sublime Designs of Romney now in my Lodgings & find them all too Grand as well as too undefined for meer outlines, & indeed it is not only my opinion but that of Mr [John] Flaxman & Mr [James] Parker both of whom I have consulted that to give a true Idea of Romneys Genius nothing less than Some Finished Engravings will do"; giving Parker's estimates for the cost of the engravings; discussing the proposed size and type of engravings, and the difficulty of finding enough qualified engravers available to take on the work so that it could be completed by November; passing on Flaxman's list of which Romney paintings would be "proper subjects for Prints"; writing that his own "Head of Romney is in very good forwardness" and has been highly commended by Parker; mentioning that he has not yet been able to meet with Daniel Braithwaite but that he intends "to call again & (as you wish) to write all I can collect from him"; asking for Hayley's decision on the engravings as soon as possible; adding that he and his wife Catherine "rejoice in the generous Paulinas [Harriet Poole] return with recovered strength to her delightful Villa" and send their "warmest love & acknowledgements."
