Dating from Sherburn, who notes "In July 1717 Pope published through Lintot a miscellany, "Poems on Several Occasions," which printed for the first time no less than seventeen 'trifles' by His Grace. Some of these might naturally have used the offensive word that has been expunged. Of course, we cannot date the revision, but one assumes that it may be for the miscellany of 1717."
Part of a large collection of letters and documents of Alexander Pope. Items within the collection have been described individually in separate catalog records; see collection-level record for more information.
Provenance
From the autograph collection of the Duke of Sussex (1773-1843).
Summary
Regarding an alteration to one of Buckingham's poems (hoping that he has rendered the poem less faulty "by changing the word Lust"), remarking that "no word should be in Poetry, especially in this little kind, which a woman cannot decently pronounce."
