Signed "E. [or G.] H. Stanley." A note on file, from an unidentified researcher, questions the attribution to Derby, though the handwriting does resemble that of Derby on an 1870 letter at the Morgan Library (though it is smaller and more controlled on MA 4224).
A pencil note reads "1850," but if the letter is from Derby it is likely not from that year, when he was apparently in Brazil.
