The year of writing from a penciled notation under Crabbe's date of "Friday / 30 May." May 30th was a Friday in 1817. The poem to which Crabbe refers is likely "The Influence of Genius" by James Brydges Willyams and published in 1816.

Summary
Apologizing that he cannot accept the invitation but it was only delivered to him the previous evening, he must return to Wiltshire but he will return in 2-3 weeks and hopes to see him then; adding "Mr. Wylliam's Poem I have seen not him but he has my good wishes for his own Sake & from general knowledge of his connections & I may add here the Merit of the poem itself."
