Dempster gives the place of writing as "Dunnichen Forfar NB."
Address panel with postmarks: "Capt. Wm Grant / 1st Battn Royal Artillery / Eastbourne / Sussex." The last part of the address has been crossed out and replaced with an illegible word.

This letter was removed from an extra-illustrated version of Letters of James Boswell Addressed to the Rev. W.J. Temple (London: Richard Bentley, 1857) that had been enlarged to three folio volumes with the addition of autograph letters and 258 portraits "as collected by E. Hornby." Other letters from the volumes are now catalogued as MA 981.1-109.
Summary
Asking him to pay out a sum of money to a soldier in his regiment, John Smart, which has been sent to him by his mother via Dempster; saying that Grant's agent in London can call at Webster and Wedderburn for reimbursement any day: "This is the only means I can devise of conveying this trifle without Expence & safely. His mother bids me also tell his Captain that her Son is a very good young man."
